CANYON, Texas — The athletic director at West Texas State has confirmed that Ron Shumate has withdrawn his name for consideration as the school's new men's basketball coach; Shumate, who has directed the Southeast Missouri State University Indians for the past three years, led the team to two consecutive MIAA titles and two straight regional crowns before this past season.

50 years ago: March 30, 1959

Another historic Cape Girardeau structure, the residence at 120 Broadway owned by Mrs. A.B. Barks and her daughter, Mrs. Mildred Marsh, is to be restored to its original appearance; sandblasting of the exterior to remove the paint is underway and, after the brick walls are tuck-pointed, the building will look like it did when it was built some 100 years ago.

Williamson and Associates, consulting engineers for the proposed sewage-disposal system in Cape Girardeau, have requested an extension of 60 days to complete on-site work and preparation of preliminary plans; continued high water on the Mississippi River, which sealed off the outlet of several sewers, has halted part of the necessary work.

75 years ago: March 30, 1934

E.C. Rhoden, division manager Midwest district of Fox West Coast Theaters Inc., spent several hours in Cape Girardeau yesterday and approved tentative plans worked out by L.O. Honig, in charge of real estate for that corporation, calling for a new picture show building on Main Street.

Painters are giving the front of the building occupied by the Cape Cafe, 28 N. Main St., a coat of dark green paint; Leo Manos is proprietor.

100 years ago: March 30, 1909

The terraces on the east side of the Common Pleas Courthouse Park are being repaired and resodded where the winter rains have washed gullies in the embankments.

W.C. Miller is again postmaster at Millersville; he resigned some time ago in favor of J.F. Wilferth, who didn't perform the duties long until he grew tired of the task.
