The Southeast Missouri State University Board of Regents authorizes the school to proceed with efforts to secure the headquarters of the Central U.S. Earthquake Consortium on campus; Dr. David Stewart, who joined the university's earth-science department this semester, recently was named executive director of the consortium.

Ron Shumate, Southeast Missouri State University's head basketball coach, has been named Division II Coach of the Year by Basketball Times, a national publication.

BENTON, Mo. -- Robert M. Edwards has been hired as superintendent of the Scott County R-4 School District by unanimous decision of the board of education; the district consists of the Blodgett, Diehlstadt, Lusk Chapel, Commerce, Sandy Woods and Benton communities.

Marvin J. Snider, chief engineer of the Missouri Highway Department, says the department will stand firm in support of the proposed Scott City terminus of Interstate 24, but not at the cost of losing Interstate 57.

BENTON, Mo. -- Appointment of a successor to Wade G. Anderson as sheriff of Scott County by the county court awaits his funeral service tomorrow; J.F. Nunnelee of Blodgett, Mo., coroner of Scott County, is sworn in as acting sheriff by Judge Frank Kelly in Circuit Court here.

Ed G. Pott, head of the Cape Coal Co., is elected president of the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce at a reorganization meeting of the board of directors; at a meeting two weeks ago, board members couldn't agree on the selection of president.

1913

Henry W. Putz, mail carrier on Pocahontas Route 1, was recently attempting to cross a creek when the raging waters swept him, his horse and buggy and mail pouch down stream; Putz managed to unhitch the horse and later rescued the mail pouch, which was rapidly swirling toward the Mississippi River; a neighbor helped him fish out the buggy and, after hitching the horse again, Putz proceeded on his way, very wet, but conscious of his duty.

The old brick sidewalk around the St. Avit grocery store on Independence Street is being torn up and a concrete walk will be put down.
