A tornado slashed through Reynolds and Wayne counties yesterday afternoon, leaving at least 20 people injured and a wide swath of wreckage before spending itself near the Wayne-Bollinger County line; by the time the turbulent weather front reached the Cape Girardeau area, it had weakened to mere showers and a sharp dip in temperature.

CHAFFEE, Mo. -- Funeral services will be conducted tomorrow for Joseph E. Barclay, 91, the last surviving member of the old St. Louis Browns' 1886 baseball team; Barclay, who died Wednesday at Sikeston, Mo., played for the team for two years; the team was an ancestor of the American League Browns.

1939

Remodeling of the Red Star Baptist tabernacle is underway and should be completed in about six weeks, when a rededication service will be held; the men of the congregation are doing the work, which includes construction of a new vestibule at the front of the interior, remodeling of the interior, and siding of the exterior with imitation brick.

A recreation center established in the Smelterville suburb is rapidly becoming the hub of all activities in the area, with features scheduled for each night except Saturday; outside playground equipment includes swings, a basketball court, a croquet set, balls and bats; indoors, there are games, such as table tennis and shuffleboard.

1914

The Cape Girardeau School Board decided last night to re-bid the contract for construction of Washington School in the far north end of the city; the new bids will be for a fireproof structure.

A burglar broke into the Stein and Lance mill on Broadway last night and carried off several sacks of flour; no clues were left by the pilferer, and the police are completely baffled.
