Shirrell home, 2419 Sunny Lane, to that of Howard Meppelink, 2417 Sunny Lane; while the Shirrell residence is destroyed, damage to the Meppelink home is confined to the outside of the garage.

WOLF LAKE, Ill. -- A huge fire at Wolf Lake late in the morning destroys 24,000 railroad ties valued at more than $300,000; the blaze also damages about 300 feet of the nearby Union Pacific Railroad mainline track, which runs between Dupo, Ill., and Scott City, Mo.

The speed at which Cape Girardeau County gets the proposed state lake at Crump is in question; the State Conservation Commission is holding up the plans to see if funds can be obtained from the federal government to speed construction of the lake.

Cape Girardeau's newest sporting facility will have a grand opening Saturday night; the Bootheel Bowhunter Club's indoor archery range in the 800 block of Broadway is already in business, and this weekend there will be a special welcome to guests; the range is in the upper floor of the building that houses RCA Electronic Supply.

Ray Runnels of the College Barber Shop recently presented a trophy, paid for by Cape Girardeau's sports fans, to Wayne Goddard, the Teachers College Indians' great tackle, who was named to the 1937 Little All-America football team.

Dealers report the retail price of better grades of gasoline is unchanged in Cape Girardeau, although officials of major companies predict a slight increase next week, because of higher freight rates on gas; some companies are selling "regular" gasoline at 17.3 cents per gallon, while some other grades are much cheaper.

River watchers are predicting spring flooding along the Mississippi and Ohio rivers, the same as last year, when both rivers went on a rampage at the same time.

BENTON, Mo. -- The election Tuesday on the proposition to bond the county for $40,000 with which to complete the unfinished courthouse carried with a strong vote, 1,463 to 638.
