Former circuit judge Lloyd G. Briggs, in a statement released yesterday, said he won't appeal the state Supreme Court order that removed him from the bench for political involvement and failing to adequately supervise his office staff when he was a Scott County magistrate.

It's back to the drawing board for the Jackson Community Teachers Association salary committee after the Jackson school board rejected the teachers' salary proposal last night.

50 years ago: March 26, 1955

An unprecedented early spring cold wave brings a return of bitter winter weather to Cape Girardeau and the district, plunging the temperature to a frigid 8 degrees that kills what was left of the peach crop and severely damages the district apple crop.

NEW MADRID, Mo. -- More than 10,000 acres of land in the tip of the Birds Point-New Madrid floodway east of here are under water from high stages of the Mississippi River and surface water accumulated from last week's heavy rain.

75 years ago: March 26, 1930

Word is received of the death at Asheville, N.C., on March 24 of Mrs. Delia C. Holt, wife of Dr. S.W. Holt, and a former resident of Cape Girardeau County; Mrs. Holt was born in Millersville in 1870, the daughter of Judge and Mrs. James F. Caldwell; she was the first woman admitted to the bar in this county.

Albert B. Hunter, 75, of LaForge, Mo., former president of the Hunter Bank at New Madrid, Mo., and member of one of the district's pioneer families, died last night at St. Francis Hospital.

100 years ago: March 26, 1905

The Rev. R.S. Brown preaches at the Presbyterian Church in the morning on "Character Building," a special address for teachers and students; in the evening his subject is "Work While Opportunity Is Afforded."

Gideon, Anderson & Co., lumber merchants at Gideon, New Madrid County, Mo., and known throughout the district, lost their big general merchandise store, blacksmith shop and offices by fire last night.
