Bishop Ignatius J. Strecker presides and preaches at the annual Acies function of the Cape Girardeau Curia of the Legion of Mary at St. Vincent's Church; following the meeting, Strecker offers a Pontifical Mass at St. Mary's Cathedral to celebrate the patronal feast of the church, the Annuciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The Cape Girardeau City Council yesterday voted to award a $1,636,327 contract for construction of a sewage treatment system to J.E. Latta Construction Co. of St. Louis, the low bidder of four firms.

C.N. Beard of St. Louis purchases the interest of J.E. Deevers in the Deevers-Estes Funeral Home, 118 S. Sprigg St.; he had owned some interest in the firm since it was established three years ago; the business is now owned and operated by Beard and Willard Estes, the name changing to the Beard-Estes Funeral Home.

The last equipment was installed at the Fred Groves garage at Jackson yesterday, and the place is now open for business; Milton Kurre is the general manager of the garage.

1913

Henry Kiel, a nephew of Henry Meystedt of Cape Girardeau and a cousin of Charles H. Daues, is the Republican candidate for St. Louis mayor; he is well known here and spent many days here when a boy.

Officers of the Cape Girardeau Commercial Club telegraph Gov. E.W. Major urging him to sign the Orr bill, which repeals the Oliver insurance rate law that has been in effect nearly two years; in looking through the list of bills passed by the Legislature, it is found that Rep. R.B. Oliver of Cape Girardeau County got only one bill through; this bill provides for a state flag of some sort.
