CHAFFEE, Mo. -- The Chaffee Board of Education has unanimously approved a resolution supporting consolidation of the Chaffee and Delta, Mo., school districts; in doing so, the board endorsed a petition drive in Chaffee that is necessary to put the issue before district voters.

Through floods, ice jams, winter freezes, spring thaws and sweltering summers, the cobblestones in the Cape Girardeau wharf have weathered the years; however, one threat to the cobblestones can't be easily remedied -- theft; because many of the shoebox-size stones are loose, some people apparently think they are there for the taking.

50 years ago: March 22, 1957

Capt. Joe B. Hensley, son of Mrs. Thelma Hensley of Cape Girardeau, was evidently aboard the U.S. Military Air Transport Service plane that was reported missing in the Pacific off the Japanese coast.

Contestants in the fifth annual Missourian Regional Spelling Bee have one more week to brush up on their spelling before the March 30 match at the Cape Girardeau Junior High School; 26 schools have entered the contest.

75 years ago: March 22, 1932

Water damage, which will necessitate extensive repairs, was caused last night by vandals who tore away some of the plumbing fixtures from the wall of a lavatory room on the second floor of the Sturdivant Bank building, 101 N. Main St. in Cape Girardeau.

W.B. Angle of Advance, Mo., has leased a barber shop at 618 Good Hope St. in Cape Girardeau from V.W. Dyer and will open it for business shortly; he has been a barber 22 years.

100 years ago: March 22, 1907

Some scoundrel recently burned the house and barn on the John E. Hobbs farm, three miles out on the Jackson gravel road; the elderly couple lost all their household goods; the barn contained large quantities of hay and farm machinery; several horses housed in the barn were turned out before the arsonists set fire to the building.

The Dreamland Theater is now building on Main Street; the floor is being raised and inclined so that everybody can see the pictures nicely; it will be open in a few days for the public.
