1988

Authorities are detaining a California man who smashed a front window at the Cape Girardeau Police Department early yesterday morning with an ax handle; the man claims he was charged in 1977 here with a crime he didn't commit.

The third Stephen Ministers class at St. Andrew Lutheran Church is commissioned during morning services; commissioned into the special ministry of caring are Bill Borgfield, Bruce Collier, Diane Crites, Pat Grebe, Cherlyn Hoffmeister, Jack Mehner, Bob Stiegemeyer and Keith Ward.

1963

A 22-year-old Cape Girardeau man, who had been released from the city jail two or three days previously, returned to the police station Monday and stole a movie projector, an opaque projector and a timer.

Retired Methodist Bishop Ivan Lee Holt of St. Louis, in town to visit with friends, tells The Missourian the common threat of communism not only is promoting unity among Christian churches, but will tend to draw the great religions of the world closer together.

1938

The B'Nai Israel congregation dedicates its new synagogue on South Main Street; following talks by Mayor Charles G. Wilson, congregation president David Minnen and others, Rabbi Philip Finkelstein of Cincinnati, Ohio, makes the principal address.

Chris Bauer is planning to build a one-story office building on the north side of the 700 block of Broadway, which will house the offices of Dr. R.A. Ritter and Dr. Dennis B. Elrod; the 10-room structure will be constructed by Vasterling, Mehrle & Schott.

1913

SIKESTON, Mo. -- At Sikeston this week, the Southeast Missouri Trap Shooters Association was organized; the Cape Girardeau Gun Club became a member when application was made by Ed Massengale, the city's sole representative at the meeting; Massengale was made vice president of the association.

Vera Young, who has been teaching the telegraph class in the business school, has resigned; after a visit with the home folks at Delta, she will go to Caruthersville, Mo., to accept a position as a bookkeeper and stenographer; Fred Wood will take charge of the class in Cape Girardeau.
