Wes Schlosser of Guardian Angel Parish in Oran, Mo., and Ron Baird of Immaculate Conception Parish in Springfield, Mo., have been named chairmen of the 1980 Diocesan Development Fund for the Springfield-Cape Girardeau Diocese.

An ordination and installation service was held last Sunday for the Rev. John Reimold, formerly of Gordonville, at St. Matthews Lutheran Church in Corning, Ark., and at St. John Lutheran Church at Lafe, Ark.; Reimold is married to the former Margie Grossheider of Gordonville.

50 years ago: March 2, 1955

City workers have planted 102 trees in the city's public parks during the winter, and another 50 will be placed within the next few days; trees have been planted in Courthouse Park, Capaha Park and Arena Park.

BENTON, Mo. -- An increase in assessment in Scott County will be a severe hardship on farm owners unless there is a proportionate reduction in taxes, the State Tax Commission is told during a meeting at which the commissioner's proposal to raise valuations for tax purposes is discussed; farm land assessment in this county will be raised an average of 95 percent, while city property will be increased by 35 percent.

75 years ago: March 2, 1930

The Christ Evangelical Sunday school and congregation meet for the first time in the morning in the new church building; the basement rooms have been finished to such an extent that enough rooms are available for Sunday school and church services.

Singer Loren G. Jones opens the big Lincoln McConnell evangelical meeting at Centenary Methodist Church; Jones opened McConnell's meeting in Cape Girardeau in 1907 as well.

100 years ago: March 2, 1905

A large number of the principal residents of Jackson met at the courthouse last night for the purpose of perfecting an organization on the plans of a commercial club; among the new club's interests for the town are paved streets, electric lights, a water works and a new county courthouse.

A new commission house will open in the near future in Cape Girardeau; Milton Haas and W.H. Catern have secured a building below Nicholas Scharf's place for the fruit house.
