25 years ago: March 19, 1983

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. — California State-Bakersfield topples the Southeast Missouri State Indians, 75-70, in an NCAA Division II quarterfinal match-up, ending the Tribe's year; Southeast finishes the basketball season 25-6.

About all that's left of the old Jackson Lumber Co., 204 E. Main St. in Jackson, is rubble; the site is being cleared in preparation for construction of a new post office later this year.

50 years ago: March 19, 1958

Hungry patrons are packing Schneider's for the annual Lions Club Pancake Day; among the first breakfast guests are Glenn Kinder, William A. Mills, William L. Mills, Frank Hohler, Ray Parr and Richard Esicar.

The Barney Oldfield Traveling Trophy was won by the St. Mary's Cathedral Grade School basketball team; the trophy is given the winner of the Private School League; members of the team are Mike Bader, Kenny Cooper, David Kearney, Tom Buehrle, Mike Fuerth, David Compas, Bill Schlegel, Kenny Jenkins, Jerome Seyer, Kenny Reiker, Joe Sachse and Steve Lorenz; Roger Oldfield coaches the team.

75 years ago: March 19, 1933

Cooper E. Lape of Jackson has been employed as a guard at the state prison at Jefferson City; Lape, a former deputy sheriff, is expected to be called for duty within three weeks.

Fire of undetermined origin guts the two-story brick dwelling of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Juden, 306 Independence St., causing practically a total loss of furnishings and badly damaging the interior; included in the loss is furniture which had been in the Juden family for many years, much of it solid walnut.

100 years ago: March 19, 1908

Surveyors are in the field in the west end of Cape Girardeau, near the fairgrounds, surveying for the proposed extension of the street railway lines; it is planned to have the fairgrounds and the Broadway lines joined into a loop.

W.F. Bender, the well-known carpenter, is circulating a petition for election to the Cape Girardeau City Council from the first ward; other council hopefuls are A.J. Brown for the third ward and L.R. Johnson for the second ward; Tom Gill expects no opposition in the fourth ward.
