The Parks and Recreation Advisory Board has recommended the city cultivate efforts to save May Greene Garden, as well as help improve the Capaha Park baseball field; the board said it would request the city enlarge the Capaha Park field as part of an effort to make it a first-class facility.

Missouri school children have been asked by Secretary of State Roy Blunt to help raise funds to preserve the state's original flag; the 75-year-old silk and hand-painted flag was designed in Cape Girardeau by Marie Watkins Oliver.

Postmaster Ted R. Regenhardt says he has been informed that a federally leased post office building, privately built under bids, will be constructed in Cape Girardeau; the probable site is the northeast corner of Frederick and Bellevue streets.

Kermit Meystedt, Greg Neihart and Alan Kesterson of Central High, Ray Glueck of Notre Dame and Scott Cauble of College High are named to The Southeast Missourian's Cape Girardeau All-City basketball team.

The Lacey-Tyler Post No. 252, composed of black veterans of the World War, meets in the evening at the post's hall, 18 N. Sprigg St.; commander of the American Legion post is Joe Woods.

Freakish tornadoes and death-dealing cyclonic cross winds strike in scattered sections of Southeast Missouri over a two-hour period late in the day, leaving nine persons dead and dozens injured; communities in Dunklin, Pemiscot, Bollinger, Cape Girardeau and Butler counties are the hardest hit.

1913

The three-month term of night school closed last night at Lorimier School; more than 100 students were enrolled, with an average attendance of about 50; as the new term has just started at the Normal School, the Normal students who had been teaching most of the night classes will have to go back to their studies.

Cape Girardeau Central High closed out its basketball season last night with a win over Fornfelt and Illmo at the Normal School gymnasium; members of the Cape Girardeau team are George Taylor, Hugo Wilder, Moses Foster, Chester Kassel and Adolph Taubert.
