Proposed budget cuts by the Reagan administration could result in changes -- perhaps in the form of a service reduction -- in Cape Girardeau's subsidized taxi service; the service relies on contributions from both the city and federal governments on a 50-50 basis to provide discounted taxi service as a limited form of mass transit.

Cape Girardeau Central High School captures top team honors in the third annual Southeast Missouri Chemistry Bowl at Southeast Missouri State University; team members are Steve Crosnoe, Kevin Brown, Stephanie Frisbie and Spencer Train.

50 years ago: March 14, 1960

SIKESTON, Mo. -- Because of delays in construction caused by bad weather, it may be necessary to hold half-day sessions in the current Sikeston High School building until the new facility is ready for occupancy.

Capt. Lee Hickam, corps officer here for the Salvation Army, says the post is in desperate need of clothing of all sizes and kinds; he reports the continued cold weather, with snow remaining on the ground an unprecedented length for this time of the season, has all but exhausted the supply of used garments on hand.

75 years ago: March 14, 1935

Despite overflow conditions in portions of Southeast Missouri, due to heavy rains which swelled the St. Francis and Black rivers, there is little danger of a major flood along the Mississippi River.

Highway 25 will be paved immediately from Jackson north if the right of way is secured, Chief Engineer T.H. Cutler of the State Highway Department tells W.F. Bergmann, chairman of the Cape Special Road District Commission, and county officials.

100 years ago: March 14, 1910

The new post office in the Federal Building is doing business in its just-completed quarters, and the employees are as happy and proud as a bunch of boys with new boots; the move was made from the Himmelberger-Harrison Building on Saturday night.

A resident of the Sawyer Hotel on Broadway was diagnosed with smallpox; he has been removed to the pest house, and the hotel was thoroughly fumigated to remove all danger of infection; hotel residents were vaccinated.
