A Union Pacific steam locomotive chugged into the Scott City depot yesterday, making a brief stop there to the delight of railroad buffs and area residents; the train left Cheyenne, Wyo., last Friday for a weeklong journey to New Orleans, where it will be on display at the World's Fair.

The Missouri Highway and Transportation Commission has given the green light to the highway department to proceed with acquisition of right of way for the reconstruction of a portion of Highway 177 in Cape Girardeau County; the project involves widening and reconstructing a 5.3-mile section from east of Route W to Route J.

50 years ago: March 14, 1959

The first annual Miss Cape Girardeau Pageant will be staged April 8 in the State College auditorium, the Cape Girardeau Jaycees sponsoring the event; the event will be a preliminary contest of the official Miss Missouri and Miss America pageants.

LEOPOLD, Mo. -- The Rev. Robert A. Landewee, son of Robert H. Landewee of Laflin, Mo., and the late Mrs. Landewee, will be ordained tomorrow afternoon at St. John's Catholic Church here; Landewee was born in Laflin and attended Leopold Elementary School and Cape Catholic High School.

When the last Frisco passenger train to run over the Gulf line into Cape Girardeau pulls in at the station at 1:05 p.m., it carries Judge John L. Moore, who also was one of the passengers on the first train operated over the line 41 years ago.

Coach Olaf Robinson of Cape Girardeau Central High School will not be an applicant for re-election by the school board; Robinson is seeking a coaching position elsewhere; rumor has it that Louis Muegge, who is coaching at Steelton, Pa., will return to the post here.
