Cape Girardeau County Prosecuting Attorney Morley Swingle has requested a standing grand jury in light of the achievements of the last county grand jury; the request was submitted in a letter to 32nd Judicial Circuit judges Stephen N. Limbaugh Jr. and A.J. Seier.
State park tax funds designated by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources to purchase more park land for two Southeast Missouri parks -- Trail of Tears and Johnson's Shut-Ins -- were deleted from the DNR's budget last week by a House appropriations committee.
A general attack on the city's drainage problems, which will include straightening about a mile of Cape LaCroix Creek, is planned for Monday; the straightening will eliminate seven sharp bends in the creek south of Bloomfield Road, and will be financed by property owners along U.S. 61 in that area.
A campaign organization is being formed here for the solicitation of funds to help finance a planned annex to Southeast Missouri Hospital; the goal for local contributions is about $430,000, which would generally match the amount expected from Hill-Burton funds.
More than 2,000 fish were taken out of the lake at Fairground Park on Saturday when numerous drags were made by volunteers with long seines; all the desirable fish -- bass, crappie, perch and yellow catfish -- were placed in streams in the county; young bass will be placed in the lake for rearing.
The Cape County Welfare Association announces it has engaged King Brady to direct a three-day Jitterbug Contest at the Walkathon building, 43 S. Main St., to raise funds for the association's welfare work.
The steamer Cape Girardeau, which was to come up from Paducah, Ky., on Sunday, has been delayed; according to Capt. Buck Leyhe, the boat won't get away from Paducah as scheduled, because preparations for the season haven't been completed.
A powder mill at the huge plant of the Dupont Powder Co. at Fayville, Ill., blew up yesterday and killed two men; the explosion was heard across the river at Commerce, Mo., and at several other towns over a radius of 10 miles.
