State Rep. Mary Kasten has filed for sixth term in Missouri House; she had considered seeking Republican nomination for Missouri Senate, but announced last month she would instead seek re-election.

Edward L. Downs, Cape Girardeau lawyer long active in area and state politics, has been appointed member and chairman of Missouri Council on Criminal Justice; Gov. Joseph P. Teasdale recommended Downs' appointment to council.

Three high school basketball teams were eliminated in first-round action in State High School B Tournament which opened last night at Houck Field House; in opening competition, Fayette Falcons defeated Montgomery City Wildcats 39-33; Shelbyville Pirates dropped Annapolis Bearcats 49-40 in second game of night; and Waynesville Tigers trounced Lemonte 61-48.
Former Girardean and second World War's fourth most decorated soldier, Neville Brand recently was signed for his eighth G.I. role in Paramount's "Stalag 17."

Cape Girardeau County during past eight years has paid $3,711,852.68 in county and state taxes, report by George H. Meyer, who retired this week as county collector after eight years' service, shows; outstanding, however, in delinquent taxes for this same period is $271,137, which collector has been unable to secure, although lawsuits have been filed in number of cases.
John R. and Jerry Randol, farmers living west of Cape Girardeau, this week disposed of what they believe to be largest litter of hogs ever sold in district; litter of 11 animals weighed total of 2,660 pounds and brought owners $299.25.
