25 years ago: March 10, 1984

The commissioner of the Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association says his office is investigating an incident in which Southeast Missouri State University basketball coach Ron Shumate threw a folding chair during a game against Northwest Missouri State a week ago.

Two mass murder suspects awaiting trials — Ottis E. Toole and Henry Lee Lucas — are considered prime suspects in the April 17, 1979, abduction of a 19-year-old gas station attendant in Scott City; Scott County Sheriff Bill Ferrell recently traveled to Texas and Florida to question the two.

50 years ago: March 10, 1959

It is reported that Robert Penrod of Jackson, a construction worker, plans to build a supermarket at the east edge of Jackson; it would be on a narrow, wooded point at the junction of U.S. 61 and Old Jackson Road.

Three small clusters of piling are driven at the damaged Marquette Cement Co. loading docks, and barge-loading operations are started in limited form in the evening; the clusters allow the company to tie up one barge at a time so it can be loaded.

75 years ago: March 10, 1934

The names of 28 candidates for Cape Girardeau city office will be on the ballot at the primary election March 20; one candidate for city commissioner, Theodore W. Roth, filed his petition late yesterday, making 24 in the race.

COLUMBIA, Mo. — Jackson defeats Doniphan 31-9 in a semifinal game of the state high school basketball tournament; in the other semifinal game, Southwest High, the Kansas City champion, defeats Beaumont of St. Louis 23-19; Southwest and Jackson will meet tonight for the state title.

100 years ago: March 10, 1909

The heavy rains of the past two days have caused considerable trouble for local railroads; there are washouts between Cape Girardeau and Delta, which prevent trains from using that part of the Hunter division; high waters damaged the Walters trestle between Cape Girardeau and Jackson, and also eroded the embankment.

The new fire wagon is taken to the fire department in the new municipal building on Independence Street.
