The Scott City Board of Aldermen has decided that the day-to-day management of city affairs is too much responsibility for the town's part-time mayor and has started a search for a full-time city administrator.

Alex Haley, made famous by his best-selling novel "Roots," will present a public lecture tomorrow night at Southeast Missouri State University's Academic Hall Auditorium; he is expected to lecture about "Roots" and genealogy.

50 years ago: March 10, 1955

Increased salaries for Cape Girardeau's public school teachers are voted by the school board, which also in fixing the tax levy for next year, bases it on the higher assessment on real estate ordered by the state tax commission; besides providing a substantial boost in pay, the new salary schedule will provide the same pay for teachers alike, elementary and high school and men and women, where the training is similar.

In spite of heavy voting for the issue in Jackson, Fruitland and Burfordville, a school bond issue of $400,000 in District R-2 fails by 21 votes at a special election.

75 years ago: March 10, 1930

The death of former president William Howard Taft March 8 recalls the president's visit to Cape Girardeau the morning of Oct. 6, 1909; he was being escorted from St. Louis to New Orleans on a special flotilla of river steamers by an organization that was boosting for a deep river channel; he stopped here from 6 to 7 a.m., making an address to thousands of people assembled on the State College campus.

The Mississippi Valley Airways Inc., has received permission from the state to sell its securities here, says Dr. George Huff; a campaign to dispose of stock to locate an airport at Cape Girardeau will be launched soon.

100 years ago: March 10, 1905

Postmaster E.W. Flentge receives word from the post office department at Washington that a mail service will begin between Cape Girardeau and Oak Ridge by train on March 27 on the Houck line; mail will be taken for Jackson, Fruitland, Pocahontas and Oak Ridge.

The Civic Improvement League's work was given much impetus last night when it was taken over by the Commercial Club; a large number of prominent businessmen will take an active interest in keeping the city clean; a "white wing" will be appointed to look after the principal streets.
