Reacting to strong neighborhood opposition, the Planning and Zoning Commission has denied a request for rezoning of seven acres between Gordonville Road and Route K for a new funeral home; the rezoning request had been made by William and Betty Kuss, James and Rita Kuss, and Joseph and Jo Neal Kuss; William and James Kuss recently joined John Carpenter as owners of Lorberg Memorial Funeral Chapel.

Mr. and Mrs. J. Pat Tlapek and their son, John Tlapek, on behalf of their company, Auto Tire and Parts, have donated the building at 122 S. Ellis St. to Southeast Missouri State University; the former auto-parts building will enable the school to move some of its physical plant operations and free up space on campus for other uses.

In keeping with Boy Scout Week, two youths are honored in formal ceremonies at Trinity Lutheran Church in the morning; Eagle Scout Joe L. Snell of Troop 8 and Star Scout Ronald Dost of Post 8 are given the God and Country Award.

The Rev. Oscar A. Gerkin, formerly of Warren, Mich., is installed as pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church during an afternoon service; participating are 16 area ministers and members of the church council.

MARBLE HILL, Mo. -- Fire, thought to have started from a defective flue in the two-story frame Model Grocery building, destroys that structure and the adjoining two-story brick building occupied by the Banner Press, Bollinger County's only newspaper, and a stone gasoline filling station building; early estimates place the damage at about $20,000.

W. Hinkle Statler of Cape Girardeau has been notified of his appointment as an inspector in this district for the State Boxing Commission; he will supervise boxing and wrestling in Southeast Missouri, both amateur and professional.

R.B. Oliver Jr. and family leave in the afternoon for Pasadena and other points in California, where they will visit friends and relatives; they will be gone about five or six weeks.

Alonzo Killian, an employee of the Black Diamond Coal Co., closes a deal for a lot on South Pacific Street; reports are that he will start building a residence there in a few days.
