25 years ago: Feb. 3, 1982

After opening in the morning despite an unexpectedly heavy snowfall, the Cape Girardeau Public Schools are forced to call off classes at 11 a.m., an almost unprecedented course of action; Southeast Missouri receives 4 to 8 inches of snow.

Voters in the Jackson School District yesterday approved one bond issue and rejected another; a $1,090,000 bond issue to finance additions to the junior high and West Lane Elementary schools won approval, while a $410,000 bond issue to finance construction of an addition to the high school gymnasium failed.

50 years ago: Feb. 3, 1957

Paced by the projected State College building program, construction in Cape Girardeau, based on known projects, appears headed for a $13,015,037 total in 1957; last year the city's general construction amounted to $2,314,086.

T.P. Estes and Gary T. Estes have sold the former Valet Cleaners, 1027 Broadway in Cape Girardeau, to Nelson Patrick.

75 years ago: Feb. 3, 1932

Construction begins on a brick building at the southwest corner of Clark Avenue and West Broadway, which will house the plant of the Cape Girardeau Memorial Art Co., a newly formed concern for the manufacture of monuments, tombstones and kindred memorial products.

R.R. Bedwell has been reappointed highway engineer for Cape Girardeau County; the County Court made the appointment after considering five applications for the position; the others seeking the job were H.E. McBride, A.R. Wingett, W.A. Bowers and Fred Hartle.

100 years ago: Feb. 3, 1907

Capt. H.H. Miles of Poplar Bluff, Mo., formerly policeman at Cape Girardeau, is here visiting old acquaintances; the captain looks fine and healthy; he is now in the saloon business.

Mr. and Mrs. C.A. Mack of Paragould, Ark., arrive in Cape Girardeau in the afternoon and are the guests of Mrs. Mack's parents, Mr. and Mrs. W.B. Weber; C.A. Mack is one of the wealthiest citizens of Northeast Arkansas, being in the general merchandise and banking business.
