Cost of attending Southeast Missouri State University will be going up over next two years, although university has yet to put figure on increase; several pending projects with financial implications for students are before Board of Regents; they include Cheney Hall renovation, Coordinating Board of Higher Education funding formula, new track facility and renovation of Houck Stadium, and graduate student fees.
Third candidate has entered race for seat on Cape Girardeau Board of education with filing yesterday of David W. Fouss, business manager of Fred A. Groves Motor Co. and former teacher; other candidates for two seats are Michael L. Richey and Richard Ryan.
50 years ago: Feb. 3, 1953
Pfc. Billy E. McManus. 22, light machine gunner in infantry regiment on front lines of Korea, lost his life in patrol action against Communist forces on Jan. 22, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frenton McManus of Delta, are notified; in letter written day before his death, McManus told his parents he would be moving up to front again in next "day or two" for positions on Old Baldy, Porkchop Hill or T-Bone Ridge, three positions prominently mentioned in news dispatches.
William Ancell, 37, engine foreman for Frisco Railroad at Chaffee, is brought to Southeast Missouri Hospital in evening with injuries sustained when he fell from top of boxcar; X-rays will be made tomorrow to learn extent of his injuries.
75 years ago: Feb. 3, 1928
Missouri Utilities Co. has submitted to city council proposed new franchise covering operation of its water and electric light plants in Cape Girardeau, and with it has presented contract, which, if adopted, would mean virtual rebuilding of street-lighting system.
Ernest E. Rudert, 80, one of oldest residents of Shawnee Township, died at home of his son, with whom he lived; Rudert was born in Gefell, Saxony, Germany, Feb. 1, 1848, and came to this country with his parents when he was 16 years old, settling at Altenburg; Rudert became wagon-maker, working at that trade in Perry County and other places, but finally settled on farm near Shawneetown.
