50 years ago: Feb. 28, 1957

The first section of interstate highway in Missouri outside of the metropolitan areas will be built in Cape Girardeau County and will be placed under contract as soon as detailed surveys are completed, says Harris D. Rodgers, retiring chairman of the Missouri State Highway Commission.

An Easter Seal Rehabilitation Center to service Cape Girardeau County and ultimately a 22-county area of Southeast Missouri will be given a public preview this weekend; located on the grounds of Southeast Missouri Hospital in a remodeled building, the center will be operated by the Missouri and Cape County Societies for Crippled Children and Adults -- the Easter Seal agencies.

75 years ago: Feb. 28, 1932

The new Red Star Baptist Gospel Tabernacle opens with an evening service; a number of Baptist ministers from Cape Girardeau, Scott and Mississippi counties are present as the tabernacle's use is initiated.

Less than 24 hours after it opened for business, Trachtenberg's, a retail clothing store at 111 N. Main St. in Cape Girardeau, was burglarized last night by thieves who took dresses, hose and hats valued at nearly $200.

100 years ago: Feb. 28, 1907

Work began Tuesday at the site of the new Roberts, Johnson & Rand Shoe Co. building on North Main Street; Gus Vogelsang, contractor, is taking borings to determine the underground conditions.

Mrs. Matilda Wessell, proprietor of the boarding house just west of the courthouse in Jackson, dies in the morning of pneumonia. The death causes much sorrow at the county seat, as she was known and beloved by all; she leaves a son and three daughters.
