Tuition and room-and-board fees at Southeast Missouri State University will be up approximately 10 percent this fall as the result of action taken by the board of regents; in related action, the board authorizes the university to refinance five university housing bond debts totaling $8,358,000.

Efforts are being made to revive the dormant public housing issue here, and initiative petitions are expected to begin circulating soon; they will ask that the ordinance activating a public housing program for Cape Girardeau be enacted and this question submitted to a popular vote; voters rejected public housing in 1962.

CHAFFEE, Mo. -- Chaffee police chief William H. Masterson, 69, died suddenly yesterday in the office of a physician here; he had left his duties shortly before his death, telling other city officials he had a pain in his chest and left shoulder.

Three downtown business buildings -- two facing Main Street and one on Water Street -- and other nearby structures are seriously threatened by fire, and a dozen families living in second- and third-floor rooms are forced into the street; a few of the rooms are gutted, but firemen check the blaze before it breaks out badly from the buildings at 36, 38 and 40 N. Main St., and 37 and 39 N. Water St.

Work is being rushed to complete the new seven-story addition to Saint Francis Hospital in about three weeks; walls of the rooms on all the floors are being finished, and equipment is to be moved in shortly.

1914

In the opinion of several Main Street businessmen, who met last night at the Commercial Club rooms, condemnation under the law is the only feasible method of attacking the proposition of opening up Main Street south of Independence Street; they voted unanimously to request the city council to proceed with condemnation.

A.W. Schrader, the Broadway photographer, is moving from 514 Broadway into his new quarters across from the Stein and Lance mill.
