Old Appleton - Townspeople of this self-reliant community dropped everything yesterday to put out grass fire which posed threat to town; gusting winds both caused emergency and contributed to danger; fire started on west side of Highway 61 and crossed to east side, threatening some buildings.
New Madrid - State regulating commission has granted request exempting Noranda Aluminum, Inc., from complying with some air pollution controls after hearing in St. Louis; Missouri Air Conservation Commission voted to allow company to continue violating state emission standards, but company must make periodic checks and submit test results to state Department of Natural Resources.
50 years ago: Feb. 25, 1952
For what is believed to be first time in history, Cape Girardeau has prospective woman candidate for city office; Mrs. William C. O'Donnell Jr., has taken out petition at city clerk's office and expects to file it soon to put herself in race for city commissioner.
Cape Girardeau County farmers, faced with increasingly serious wolf problem, have been invited to wolf-trapping school, sponsored by one federal and two state agencies, to be held week of March 17 in Oak Ridge area; county Extension Agent A.D. Arnhart says farmers are reporting increasing number of prairie wolves, or coyotes.
75 years ago: Feb. 25, 1927
Final plans and specifications for new $500,000 hotel, to be built at Broadway and Fountain, have been completed and will be sent out to contractors early next week; bids will be received March 14, and contract will be let soon after that date, with construction work to start before April 1.
Mrs. Annie Juden Huey, 80, native of Cape Girardeau County and member of pioneer family, dies at home of her daughter, Mrs. Claude Williams, 520 Themis, with whom she made her home for past several years.
