PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- The Federal Bureau of Investigation has been called in to investigate suspected telephone wiretapping by a city official and a Perryville resident; police here determined yesterday that a phone conversation between city officials was illegally intercepted.

Hopeful applicants strut their stuff when the Cape Girardeau Fire Department holds agility tests for prospective firefighters; the department has 105 applicants for several job openings.

With Illinois legislators debating whether to lift the state ban on lotteries -- considered a bar to bingo -- it is rumored that bingo will again be played at some establishments across the river in the near future, possibly this weekend.

75 years ago: Feb. 22, 1936

Breakup of the ice jam in the Mississippi River, all along the 200-mile front where it is frozen, may be expected at any time if the weather continues to moderate; reports here say at two points on the river the ice is slipping.

With the final approval for the new West End sanitary sewer system received by the city from the Public Works Administration office in St. Louis, actual work on the project will begin as soon as there is a break in the cold weather; the contract for the work is held by Edward L. Markham of Cape Girardeau.

100 years ago: Feb. 22, 1911

Paul Williams, son of Dr. P.R. Williams, returns to St. Louis on the afternoon Frisco train; he is taking the medical course at Washington University.

John Borgard, the Broadway tailor, receives a fine Overland touring car on the steamer Ferd Harold in the morning.
