Dennis Marchi, manager of Schnucks Food and Drug, was given the 47th Distinguished Service Award last night by the Cape Girardeau Jacycees for his significant contributions to the community in a variety of areas; the annual Boss of the Year recognition went to Dan Stetina, manager of Bonanza Restaurant.

Members of the Cape Girardeau County Republican Central Committee vote to recommend E.C. Younghouse to Gov. John Ashcroft to fill a vacancy on the county commission.

1963

The ice-bound Mississippi River has locked out the supply of petroleum products to five companies with river terminals at Cape Girardeau, causing some stocks to dwindle and forcing a shift in operations in some cases; the companies affected are Shell Oil Co., American Oil Co., Mobil Oil Co., Simpson Oil Co., and the J.D. Streett Co.

Two contracts totaling $1,672,968 will be awarded to the R.B. Potashnick-D.L Harrison Co. of Cape Girardeau for the Highway 61 urban improvement through the city and one-half-mile beyond to the south, the state Highway Commission has decided.

1938

A gray automobile, headed east on Themis Street, runs down the cobblestone incline of the Mississippi River wharf in the morning, plunging into the river and sinks, carrying with it an unidentified man at the wheel; witnesses call the police, and dragging for the car and the unknown driver starts soon after the accident.

Nearly 100 dentists from this district and Southern Illinois are in Cape Girardeau for the opening of a two-day convention of the Southeast Missouri Dental Association, its 36th annual meeting.

1913

A bunk car, belonging to a gang of bridge men, who have been working at the roundhouse, burned last night; when the fire was discovered, the workers made it out safely with their clothing; an engine was hurriedly brought to the scene, and the car was hauled down the track where it was allowed to burn up.

The Georgia Lee passes down the river at noon on its return trip; it stops here and takes on a number of hides being shipped to Cairo, Ill., by Edw. Ruehmann & Co.; it also unloads a lot of merchandise here.
