A two-alarm fire, believed caused by a lighted cigarette, caused extensive damage to the second floor of a two-story business building at 115-A Themis St. in downtown Cape Girardeau late yesterday; the first floor is occupied by Ervin's Metalsmiths Inc., while the second floor is used by the Alcoholics Anonymous organization.

A benefit basketball game features Gov. John Ashcroft during the half-time break at the Southeast Missouri State University Indians game; a team made up of university students and the governor bests a team of University Foundation members, 12-8; the benefit raises $10,000 for the Governor's Scholarship program.

1964

Plans to construct a 125-bed nursing home in Cape Girardeau have been shelved; a St. Clair, Mo., company had planned to build the $700,000 structure near the corner of Sherwood and Westwood drives.

Cape Girardeau voters thoroughly thrash the $1,250,000 airport bond issue proposal, smashing city voting records in the process; the unofficial result is 2,685 votes in favor of the question and 4,133 ballots opposed.

1939

Kimbel Truck Lines has secured a city permit for the installation of a 12,000-gallon underground gasoline storage tank at the trucking headquarters, 3 S. Park Ave.; the gasoline will be used in the Kimbel equipment.

Students of Teachers College, who desire it, will be fingerprinted by members of the Alpha Phi Omega Boy Scout fraternity during the week of March 1; all necessary supplies and equipment will be furnished by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and records will be used only for identification in case of accidents or other emergencies.

1914

J.P. Meyers, in charge of the accounting department of the water and light company, has moved his residence from South Spanish Street to a higher elevation at 449 N. Frederick St.

Big Bill Barenkamp, the only baseball twirler that Cape Girardeau ever sent to the national game, was in the city the past few days visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Barenkamp Sr.; he departs for Chicago, from whence he will go to Oakland, Calif., where he will play in the Pacific Coast League this summer.
