25 years ago: Feb. 16, 1982

Cape Girardeau County's proposed building permit program is running into a flood of opposition from farmers who feel farm buildings should be exempted from any permit program.

Claiming it is "contrary to the orderly, efficient and economic development of the area," the Cape Girardeau City Council is expected to adopt a resolution this week objecting to the opening of a mobile home park near Klaus Park between Cape Girardeau and Jackson.

50 years ago: Feb. 16, 1957

Lucius A. Brown has been promoted from assistant foreman to foreman of the making department of the Cape Girardeau No. 2 plant of International Shoe; the Perryville, Mo., native has been employed by International for 31 years.

By a vote of 468 to 227, Delta voters approve a $225,000 general obligation bond issue for the construction of a modern, 14-room school with an additional multipurpose unit for cafeteria and recreation purposes.

75 years ago: Feb. 16, 1932

A total of 1,638 shares of stock representing an investment of $163,800 have been deposited through three local banks with the stockholders protective committee appointed Jan. 18 for the purpose of protecting the preferred stock of local shareholders in future action with regard to the financial condition of the Cape Girardeau traffic bridge.

Tests given to Cape Girardeau's new firetruck yesterday are formally pronounced as having met requirements laid down by the Missouri Inspection Bureau, which fixes fire insurance rates in the state.

100 years ago: Feb. 16, 1907

The report of a committee appointed by the Cape Girardeau Commercial Club to examine the city's fire protection declares the system must be improved to keep pace with the growth of the city; the report calls the current service "obsolete and totally inadequate."

A fairly large crowd, as large as the gymnasium would hold, watched the Normal School basketball teams defeat the Carbondale (Ill.) Normals in close and exciting games yesterday; the girls' game was won by a score of 14-13 and the boys' game by a score of 41-39.
