A field of seven candidates will compete for two seats on the Cape Girardeau Board of Education; Friday -- the last day to file for the three-year term -- added Larry Payne to the ballot; other candidates are Roger Allgood, incumbent Dr. C. John Ritter, Dr. Robert Skelton, Dr. Erwin Brese, Dr. Thomas B. Harte and Timothy F. Ruddy.

If all goes well, subscribers of the local cable television system could be receiving regular programming on Channel 10, the public access channel, as early as next week, says Jerald Jones of Cape Girardeau Cable Television.

50 years ago: Feb. 15, 1956

Special services mark the beginning of Lent in a number of Cape Girardeau churches; ashes are distributed at St. Mary's and St. Vincent's Catholic churches, and at Trinity Lutheran Church; special services are also held at Christ Episcopal Church and Christ Evangelical and Reformed Church.

The contract between the trustees of the Community Industrial Development Fund and the Burton J. Gerhardt Construction Co. for the construction of the Cagleco Sportswear building is formally signed by W.W. Parker for the trustees and Burton J. Gerhardt for the construction firm.

75 years ago: Feb. 15, 1931

A committee of students, representing various religious faiths at the Teachers College, who met recently with Kathleen Gillard, dean of women, and the Rev. W.C. Ellzey, student pastor at Centenary Methodist Church, drafted resolutions which they will present in the near future at a meeting of the Cape Girardeau Ministerial Alliance, proposing the establishment of a Student Religious Council.

The Kelso Oil Co. has purchased a tract of land at the northwest intersection of highways 61 and 74 south of Cape Girardeau; officials of the company won't say what use they will make of the tract, but the location is considered a good site for a retail gasoline and oil and motor super-service unit.

100 years ago: Feb. 15, 1906

While the various towns of Cape Girardeau County have been enjoying the wave of prosperity that is sweeping over the country, the village of Pocahontas has been having its share of good times.

The new transfer wagon of Theodore Bauerle appears on the streets of Cape Girardeau and starts in doing a good business; Bauerle recently went to St. Louis and purchased the wagon with the intention of working up a drayage patronage.
