25 years ago: Feb. 14, 1986

A $1 million endowment campaign has been launched by Notre Dame High School; the campaign, the first in the school's history, will be led by Cape Girardeau businessmen Frank D. Emmendorfer and Michael D. Kohlfeld.

Shortly after 7:30 this morning, a tanker truck carrying a split load of gasoline and diesel fuel turns over on its side while attempting to leave the Mobil Oil Corp. fuel dispensary near the intersection of Highway 74 and Giboney Street; one of the truck's top fuel ports opens, but firefighters collect much of the fuel in buckets, returning it to the pumping station by hand.

50 years ago: Feb. 14, 1961

Cape Girardeau citizens give a substantial majority to $1,598,000 in general obligation bonds for construction of a sewer disposal plant and connecting system; however, the ballots fall short of the required two-thirds required for passage.

BENTON, Mo. -- Burglars break into the Benton post office in the evening, taking several packages and first-class letters; a safe isn't bothered, nor are stamps taken.

75 years ago: Feb. 14, 1936

The cold, damp weather has been accompanied by scores of cases of pneumonia; in Cape Girardeau physicians are treating in homes and in the city's hospitals about 100 cases of pneumonia, while Jackson doctors have about 20 pneumonia cases.

Charles Sapienza, formerly of Cape Girardeau, has moved his confectionery here from Perryville, Mo., and plans to open the establishment, to be known as the Broadway Confectionery, at 625 Broadway possibly tomorrow; his wife and their children will move here after school closes in the spring.

100 years ago: Feb. 14, 1911

The Selle home at 807 Good Hope St. is a place of double mourning today as Frank Selle of Henderson, Ky., who came home yesterday to attend his mother's funeral, was suddenly stricken with heart failure last night and died.

John Remsburg is tuning pianos at Jackson this week; Mrs. Helenkampf and Minnie Jones, two of the best musicians in Southeast Missouri, had 25 orders for him when he arrived yesterday.
