The J.C. Penney store at West Park Mall sponsors baby races in the afternoon; 75 infants, ranging in age from 4 to 18 months, attract a large crowd of onlookers in their "run for the rattles."

ORAN, Mo. -- Timmy Beussink, the 6-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Glen Beussink of Oran, has been chosen as Missouri's 1982 Easter Seals poster child; Timmy suffers from spina bifida and has trouble walking.

50 years ago: Feb. 13, 1957

Voters of Reorganized District R-5, embracing the south Cape Girardeau County area around Delta, will go to the polls Saturday to ballot on a bond issue for $225,000 to construct an elementary school to serve the entire district.

CHAFFEE, Mo. -- The drive to raise money to purchase property for construction of a lake and state park near here is deemed successful by the Scott County Lake Association with the collection of $9,708.75.

75 years ago: Feb. 13, 1932

Mrs. A.C. Hope, an invalid for six months, is carried from her burning home at Fruitland by her 14-year-old daughter, Pollyanna, who endangered her own life to rescue her mother.

Interest in the Cape Girardeau mayoral race is heating up with the withdrawal of J.C. Zimmerman on Friday and the news that petitions will be placed in circulation this afternoon on behalf of the candidacy of Rush H. Limbaugh; the report is that those who are backing Limbaugh will swing their support to another candidate if he can't be induced to run.

100 years ago: Feb. 13, 1907

Officials will arrive in Cape Girardeau next week to be present when appraisers view the land the federal government wants to use for a federal building site; the appraisers, D.A. Glenn, W.H. Huters and J.T. Nunn, appointed by counsel for the government and of the landowners, will examine the property at the southeast corner of Broadway and Fountain Street and then determine a fair price to be paid by the government for the land.

The press brick company has moved its office in with those of the telephone company on the third floor of the Sturdivant Bank building, at the northwest corner of Main and Themis streets in Cape Girardeau.
