A federal judge late yesterday enjoined the Army Corps of Engineers from activating the Birds Point-New Madrid Floodway in a measure to relieve flooding northward along the Mississippi and Ohio rivers; the injunction was immediately appealed by the corps to the U.S. 8th Circuit Court of Appeals; the ruling is considered a major victory by property owners within the floodway.

Saint Francis Medical Center announces it has submitted a letter of intent to the State Health Planning Agency for a renovation and expansion project.

50 years ago: May 11, 1958

A man sitting in a chair in front of the Withers' filling station at Delta is injured when an automobile, making a turn at the intersection of Highway 25 and Route N, strikes the chair and the building; Frank Looney, 73, suffers cuts and bruises on the leg.

The Southeast Missouri Regional Science Fair representatives to the National Science Fair at Flint, Mich. -- Dan Golightly and Bob Goin -- return following flights from Flint to Chicago, St. Louis and then Cape Girardeau Municipal Airport.

75 years ago: May 11, 1933

A proposal for the formation of a new corporation to purchase the holdings of the Cape Girardeau Hotel Co., thereby safeguarding the investment of local stockholders in the Marquette Hotel, is made in a letter dispatched to stockholders; the hotel property is to be sold under a court execution May 27.

Sixteen youths are yet to be qualified for Cape Girardeau County's quota of the reforestation corps, according to W.F.D. Batjer, government chairman for the county's registration; 52 lads have been listed, and the quota is 68.

100 years ago: May 11, 1908

Mrs. Edward Schindler leaves in the morning for Perryville, Mo., to be present at the graduation at the high school there; her brother is a member of the graduating class.

The packet service between Cape Girardeau and Cairo, Ill., is an assured fact; Clay Phelps signs a contract with a boat-building firm in Cincinnati, which agrees to deliver a boat here in a month; the boat will be 45 feet long and will accommodate about 50 passengers.
