The Army Corps of Engineers and levee districts throughout the area are closely monitoring earthen main-line and secondary Mississippi River levees as the river continues to climb toward a predicted record 46 feet; with the Mississippi at 41.3 feet at Cape Girardeau, none of the levees appear to be threatened.

The Jackson School Board unanimously approves a new salary schedule, giving district teachers a $1,600 base pay increase or about a 13 percent salary increase for the 1983-1984 school year.

50 years ago: May 3, 1958

Returning for the final round of their 1958 series of contests, nearly 1,500 pupils from Southeast Missouri high schools are in Cape Girardeau to compete in scholastic events at Academic Hall and in the track and field meet at Houck Field Stadium.

Richard Esicar received the Key Man of the Year Award at the annual Jaycees inaugural ball held last night at the Cape Girardeau Country Club; Esicar has been active in club events and has served on many committees.

75 years ago: May 3, 1933

Facing the prospect of sharply decreased revenue by reason of decreased valuation of taxable property in Cape Girardeau County, the County Court judges are looking for ways to reduce operating expenses; it appears, says Presiding Judge William J. Kies, the pauper fund must bear the greatest part of the county's budget readjustment.

Thirty young men from Cape Girardeau County have enrolled for service in the federal government's forest conservation corps; an effort is being made to enroll as many out in the county as in Cape Girardeau city in order to have the 68 young men allotted from the county representative of the population.

100 years ago: May 3, 1908

In the absence of the Rev. Adolph Kistler, no regular service is held at the Presbyterian Church; instead the Home Department of Sabbath Schools gives a musical worship; for the first time in the history of Cape Girardeau, a full orchestra performs sacred selections at the service.

The Cape Girardeau Capahas open the baseball season with a win over a first-rate Anna, Ill., club, 5-1.
