Herbst, speaking at a council study session, suggests the city should do everything it can to construct sewer trunk lines in northern and western sections of the city to prevent periodic sewage backup problems; Herbst hopes to see a revenue bond issue to finance the project on the August ballot.

The Jackson Board of Aldermen, on a vote of 4-2, approves the sale of a vacant city lot at Mary and North High streets to the local American Legion post.

50 years ago: April 18, 1958

A lawsuit that sought to stop construction of the floodwall along the Mississippi River in Cape Girardeau is dismissed in Common Pleas Court.

Delegates of Christian Churches in Missouri wind up their 119th state convention with a general morning session at the Arena Building; the Rev. Romans Smith of Kansas City, retiring president, presides over the concluding session, with the final benediction given by the new president, the Rev. William T. Gibble of Jefferson City.

75 years ago: April 18, 1933

KENNETT, Mo. -- Three companies of National Guardsmen -- from Caruthersville and Hayti, Mo., and Kennett -- will patrol the levees of the St. Francis River tonight to watch for leaks and prevent tampering; while heavy rains have moved away from the area, the St. Francis River is expected to rise two more feet today.

Missouri Gov. Guy B. Park has named two new members of the Teachers College Board of Regents: lawyers George Munger of Bloomfield, Mo., and Orville A. Zimmerman of Kennett, Mo.

100 years ago: April 18, 1908

All aspirants for honors on the Capaha baseball team this season are asked to be at the fairgrounds ball park tomorrow afternoon for tryouts; several pitchers will demonstrate their abilities.

Lawyer Edward D. Hays of Jackson returns from St. Louis with an order of mandamus to force Jackson Mayor R.W. Russell to sign the saloon licenses of Conrad Schade; Schade got a majority of the property holders in the block where he desires to open his place to sign the petition to the county court for a license; the Jackson council also approved his petition, but Russell has refused to sign the license.
