With fitting ceremony, Salvation Army's annual Tree of Lights program is inaugurated; tree is located on post office lawn on Broadway.

There's a steady stream of taxpayers paying 1953 state and county taxes each day at main office in Jackson and branch office in Common Pleas Courthouse in Cape Girardeau; during November, state and county collections amounted to $229,689.67.

75 years ago: Dec. 9, 1928

Bert F. Holly, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Holly of Illmo, has been designated for entrance examination at West Point Military Academy by Sen. Harry B. Hawes; Holly, who was graduated last year from Illmo High School, is freshman in Teachers College at Cape Girardeau.

New electric sign will be installed on front of building at 625 Broadway, occupied by Kassel's Jewelry store; sign, which is six feet long, is designed to appear like medieval castle.
