Residents of Cape Girardeau awaken to the first snowfall of the season; the snow amounts to only one inch at the airport and slightly more in some parts of the city; still, it's enough to snarl morning rush hour traffic and close most area schools for the day.
The Mississippi River at Cape Girardeau yesterday fell to its lowest level of the year at 2.7 feet; preparations are being made to excavate a trench from the water intake tunnel mouth at Union Electric's Cape Rock water pumping station through bedrock and into the river to keep water supplied to the station if the river level drops further.
Ron Yeater, the engineer employed by the Navy who inspected the prospective site of a Naval Reserve Training Center here, is "delighted" with the location; the four-acre site abuts Arena Park on the north and is situated west of U.S. 61; it is under city option for purchase should it be selected by the Navy.
The United Fund annual drive appears to be bogged down in its efforts to obtain monetary support for eight community organizations; contributions to date amount to $56,000; this year's goal is $89,000.
At the request of former president Herbert Hoover, The Missourian will join other newspapers in the United States in a quick campaign to secure funds for the relief of the people of war-stricken Finland.
Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Hill of Fairdealing, Missouri, made perfect grades in all four subjects each took at the Teachers College during the fall term; that's eight As, four apiece for the couple; last summer during the hot weather, they made three As each.
Mrs. Ruth O'Donoghue, one of the oldest residents of Cape Girardeau, dies at her home on Themis Street at age 76 years and 8 months; she is survived by five children: May Green and George Green of Cape Girardeau, Mrs. W.A. Nicodemus of Telluride, Colorado, Florence O'Donoghue of St. Louis and Herbert O'Donoghue of Dallas.
Mr. and Mrs. E.E. Morrison of Lorimier Place entertained the West End Club and a few intimate friends last night with a Progressive Rook party, and a most enjoyable time was had; among the guests were Mr. and Mrs. George Cross, Mr. and Mrs. D.A. Chapin, Mr. and Mrs. C.N. Mosley and Mr. and Mrs. Richard Bosse.
