Cape Girardeau County's sales tax growth for this year was 4.5 percent, about half as great an increase as the county experienced in 1986; during 1987, Cape County merchants collected $2,415,245.90 in sales taxes, up $106,427 from last year.

Two incumbents seeking new terms are the first to file for seats on the Cape Girardeau City Council; David Barklage is seeking a second, four-year term, while Peter Hilty is hoping for a third term.

1962

Francis Lewis, manager of Reinholdt and Gardner, investment brokers, has been appointed to coordinate the final phase of the stock sales drive for the Greater Cape Girardeau Development Corp.; the campaign goal is $200,000 to buy up to 120 acres of property to spur industrial growth in Cape Girardeau.

About 25 persons met recently to discuss the possibility of bringing the American Wind Symphony Orchestra to Cape Girardeau next summer; explaining the aims and purposes of the orchestra to the group was Robert A. Boudreau, founder and director of the orchestra, which gave its first concert on the Allegheny River in 1957.

1937

Today is a real weather anniversary in Cape Girardeau; 20 years ago the lowest temperature on record in Cape Girardeau County, 23 degrees below zero, was registered, and the heaviest snow in the 20-year period also fell; the flakes piled up to a depth of 24 inches.

Judge I.R. Kelso says he will open law offices in the First National Bank building some time before Christmas; a suite of six rooms on the second floor is being reconditioned for his offices.

1912

Superintendent George H. Reavis of the Cape Girardeau Public Schools says arrangements have been made to have a free night school here for the benefit of those over 14 years of age, who aren't able to attend the day school; pupils may attend the night school two, three or five evenings each week, from 7:30 to 9, at Lorimier School.

River boats are certainly doing good business just now, handling Christmas goods; the Cape Girardeau came in yesterday loaded to the guards with freight for its namesake.
