25 years ago: Dec. 8, 1981

The Jackson Senior Center has announced plans to purchase the Lichtenegger Finer Foods store and parking lot in Jackson for use as a senior citizens nutrition center.

A proposal that would affect the secondary time schedule and another that would reduce the Cape Girardeau School Districts' staff by 10 to 12 people bring a full house of teachers to the school board meeting; the reduction of staff would result in a savings to the district of between $120,000 and $160,000; the alteration in the time schedule would largely solve the problem of part-time attendance at the high school level and would also mean that fewer teachers would be needed.

50 years ago: Dec. 8, 1956

Narvol A. Randol of Cape Girardeau, Southeast Missouri Boy Scout Council finance campaign chairman, announces that the following towns have gone over their goals: Caruthersville, Harkey's Chapel, Clarkton, Senath, Arbyrd, Hornersville, Morehouse, Bragg City, Bloomfield, Canalou, Benton and Kewanee; the council is still $22,000 short of its goal.

Howard Boyd has been elected president of the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce for the year; he is an official of the Pipkin-Boyd-Neal Packing Co.

75 years ago: Dec. 8, 1931

Cape Girardeau Mayor Edward L. Drum is preparing forms to be used by the fire department in its capacity as an unemployment bureau.

The St. Louis Court of Appeals affirms the verdict of a Common Pleas Court jury here last Dec. 30, awarding $1,000 to the Hunze family for damages resulting from a break in the West End sewer line that caused sanitary sewage to flow into Cape La Croix Creek, polluting the water and making it unfit to use.

100 years ago: Dec. 8, 1906

Addison Wilson, one of the pioneers of Cape Girardeau County, who spent most of his life on a farm near Shawneetown, died at his home near that place last night at age 82; he is survived by his wife, who at 84 years of age is in good health; other survivors are a son and three daughters.

G. Herbert Brinton of near Philadelphia, Pa., is in Cape Girardeau visiting his old-time friend, L.B. Blackwood, the architect.
