1962

A 3.8-mile stretch of Interstate 55 -- from the airport to Highway 74 -- is opened to general traffic at 10 a.m.; the opening represents the first section of I-55 in the state to be used by general traffic.

A group of newly elected members of the Missouri House of Representatives arrives in Cape Girardeau in the morning to tour the State College campus; the stop here is part of a three-week tour across the state to acquaint the new lawmakers with state-supported institutions.

1937

The Cape Girardeau County Court moves to acquire by purchase or condemnation the traffic bridge over the Mississippi River at Cape Girardeau; the court has retained Clyde A. Vandivort, former manager of the bridge, to represent it in negotiations with the owners, Stranahan, Harris & Co. of Toledo, Ohio, for the span's purchase.

Cape Girardeau and the district are in the grip of the coldest pre-Christmas weather in many years, as a polar-like wind sends the mercury tumbling to 8 degrees above zero, a drop of 35 degrees in 12 hours.

1912

Edna Schuppan was thrown from a buggy late yesterday evening and painfully injured during a runaway down the Lorimier School hill on Independence Street.

Mr. and Mrs. Otto Vogt return from Perryville, Mo., where they spent a few days with relatives; Mr. Vogt spent most of his time hunting and brought back a number of quails, rabbits and squirrels.
