The latest candidate to file for the city council seat now held by Mayor Paul W. Stehr is Jerry L. Young; Young operates Jerry Young Enterprises, Inc., which encompasses Speed Equipment World, Southeast General Tire and Wonder Muffler.

PERRYVILLE, Mo. -- The Perryville Board of Aldermen last night took the first step toward acquiring a cable television franchise; the board approved the first reading of an ordinance which would establish a provision for a cable system; it will begin advertising for bids during the next few weeks.

50 years ago: Dec. 5, 1955

Regenhardt Construction Co. of Cape Girardeau was the award winner for a $1,027,518 highway paving project in three parts of Madison County, Illinois.

Movement of Christmas traffic to allow more shoppers more parking space during the days and evenings of the current season is assured by the city council, when it approves recommendations of the Traffic Advisory Committee for two-hour parking in certain areas of the Main Street business district.

75 years ago: Dec. 5, 1930

The Radio Service Co., recently established at 716 Broadway by Parker Cunningham and Elmer Hirsch, has received new equipment to make their repair shop more modern; Cunningham says they will do general radio set repairing and will carry supplies.

A plan whereby lowering of fire insurance rates in Cape Girardeau is sought has been worked out by city council members and will be put into effect this month; a monthly inspection of all buildings in the city, particularly those in the business districts, will be made, and reports of such work will be made to the council.

100 years ago: Dec. 5, 1905

A party of Jackson men, composed of Dr. J.J. Mayfield, C.W. Wolters, Ben Vinyard and Fred Hartle, have purchased a large piece of property in Jackson and will convert it into city lots; the land is part of that owned by attorney John Hope.

John Remsburg delivered the pianos to the Normal School yesterday; the ones for Celia Campbell's room and W.S. Dearmont's home are the two finest upright pianos in the city.
