Cleanup operations on Cape Girardeau County's roads and bridges are continuing in the wake of heavy rains and flash flooding last weekend; County Court Associate Judge Leonard F. Sander estimates that at least half of the county's 426 miles of roads need gravel and "shaping up."
An Air Force pilot from Cape Girardeau and his fighter aircraft are missing after a midair collision 93 miles west of Okinawa; an extensive air-sea search is being conducted for Capt. Edwin Cardin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Riley Cardin of Cape Girardeau.
Ground is broken for an education building of New McKendree Methodist Church at Jackson; a little more than a year ago, a successful campaign to raise money to erect the building was started.

Taking advantage of the rising stage of the Mississippi River and warmer weather, government river fleet officers are moving their boats into winter quarters at Cape Girardeau and at Fayville, Ill., across from Commerce, Mo.; high water has broken up ice floes north of the city and released barges, flats and other pieces of floating equipment that had been tied up during the recent near-zero weather.
After a forced weather delay of several weeks, Cape Girardeau city workers are again dragging more mud from the lagoon at Fairground Park, deepening the lake.
