The last meeting of the Byrd Township Special Road District administrative board is held in the morning; at the meeting, the four board members close out the district's accounts and sign over its remaining assets to the county as the district is dissolved.

Controversy reigned yesterday for the University High boys basketball team during the quarterfinal-round loss to Woodland in the 40th annual U-High Christmas Tournament, when the Preps' five starters left the team; the move came when the starters found themselves benched against Woodland after an overtime loss to the Kelly Hawks the previous night.

50 years ago: Dec. 28, 1959

Albert Hall, for almost a half century a dormitory for State College students, will be abandoned Sunday, when its young women occupants return from the holidays and move their belongings into the first unit of the new four-unit Dearmont Quadrangle.

For the first time since plantings were put in on Cape Rock Drive, they were not molested by vandals in search of free Christmas trees; in prior Christmas seasons, as many as eight trees have been stolen.

75 years ago: Dec. 28, 1934

A.F. Lindsay, Cape Girardeau architect, has been named chairman of a local committee to direct the home improvement and repair program under the National Housing Act; through advertising, distribution of literature and a house-to-house canvass, it is planned to interest property owners here in modernizing and repairing their homes.

The Colonial Beauty Shoppe, owned by Myrtle Pear, has been moved to a new location, 711 Broadway, from the building at 825 Broadway.

100 years ago: Dec. 28, 1909

Mamie Owensby arrived in Cape Girardeau yesterday from St. Louis and has opened a hairdressing parlor in the Himmelberger-Harrison Building; she has had five years of experience at Little Rock, Ark., Memphis, Tenn., and St. Louis.

The granite paving has been finished to the top of Broadway hill on the south side of the street.
