Sales tax receipts in Cape Girardeau County were up 11.81 percent in 1986, according to county Auditor H. Weldon Macke, who is at a loss to explain the substantial increase; the county received $2,524,916.58 from its half-cent sales tax during 1986.

In keeping with projections, fall student enrollment at Southeast Missouri State University declined for the second consecutive year; Southeast's fall enrollment of full-time equivalent students was 7,685, 334 fewer than in the fall of 1985.

Charles B. Lamb, 91, a college professor who trained teachers in industrial arts education at Southeast Missouri State College for nearly a half century before retiring in 1952, dies in O'Fallon, Ill.

The estate of W.H. Brucher has sold a tract of land to Marquette Cement Mfg. Co.; the plot is a little over 70 acres; it is level land adjoining the cement company property, about a mile south of Old Sprigg Street, and near the former Commerce Road; State College Farm had been cultivating the land.

In the absence of the pastor, the Rev. W.P. Smith, there is no morning service after Sunday school at the Full Gospel Mission, 311 N. Fountain St.; in the evening, the Rev. C.E. Barringer fills the pulpit; Smith is in Johnston City, Ill., visiting his father.

The Rev. Barclay Schwegler of New Madrid, Mo., fills the Presbyterian pulpit for the pastor, Dr. C.H. Morton; Schwegler formerly was pastor at Perryville, Mo., but does not hold a pastorate now.

When A.M. Jines, the new proprietor of the Terminal Hotel, gets through with improvements there, the hotel will be one of the best in Southeast Missouri; Jines has begun at the bottom and will thoroughly remodel, refurnish and beautify the entire Water Street structure; new sanitary plumbing and a new lighting system throughout have been installed.

Vivian Dyer, who has been working at the St. Charles barbershop the past two years, is now at the Commercial shop.
