Goose Creek bridge on Old Cape Road in Jackson, near closed Kasten Building Center, is scheduled to be replaced in late 1994; although existing bridge is still in good condition, it restricts flow of water when flooding occurs on Creek.

Small fire broke out in kitchen area of Cape Girardeau County Jail last night, causing minor damage to stove; deputy extinguished fire before firefighters arrived only minutes after the call.

25 years ago: Dec. 27, 1978

Charleston - Betty Hearnes, wife of former Gov. Warren E. Hearnes, says she will seek nomination to fill statehouse position of Rep. Fred DeField, if he resigns to accept job with federal government.

Two Jackson men are accused of assaulting another man in front of Jackson police station, stealing his van and leading authorities on high-speed chase which ends when van slams into bridge off Route D two miles north of Jackson, demolishing both vehicle and bridge.

50 years ago: Dec. 27, 1953

South Side Baptist congregation has purchased property at 1012 S. Ellis, formerly owned by Church of God; property consists of main auditorium, completely furnished, and five-room parsonage.

Christian Church congregation honors the Rev. and Mrs. Frank S. Wilfinger at farewell dinner following morning worship service; Wilfinger has been called to extended active military service with Sixth Armored Division.

75 years ago: Dec. 27, 1928

J.E. Boals, 38, of Morley, is injured while working at Emerson-Smith Gin Co.; his left arm is caught in saws of machine, and it is badly mangled and crushedt.

Professor Burwell Fox Sr., of Ironton, 80-year-old educator of more than half-century experience in Missouri Ozark country, is guest in Cape Girardeau, visiting his son and daughter-in-law, Professor and Mrs. Burwell Fox Jr., 323 N. Lorimier, and grandchildren.
