Cape Girardeau School District has developed process to cut $1.4 million from district's budget, and Board of Education likely will consider reduction package in March; like many districts in state, Cape Girardeau is cutting its budget because of defeat of Proposition B.

Despite earlier fears of navigation problems this winter due to low water on Mississippi River between St. Louis and Cairo, Ill., barge traffic is moving without difficulty to terminals in Louisiana.

Opposition to pardon or general amnesty for Vietnam War resisters has been voiced in unanimously endorsed resolution drafted by Lloyd Dale Clippard Post 3838, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and forwarded to President-elect Jimmy Carter.

Former Missourian reporter and city editor, Don E. Gordon, has been named managing editor of newspaper; Gordon, who most recently was assistant city editor for Tulsa Tribune, succeeds John L. Blue, who previously was elevated to executive editor.

50 years ago: Dec. 27, 1951

Winter's grip has brought work on new high school to practical standstill, but summary of construction costs up to present shows that substantial start has been made on $1,500,000 structure despite unusually poor weather conditions from beginning.

Body of Sgt. 1c Donald E. Franklin, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Allen of Cape Girardeau, who was killed in action in Korea on Sept. 21, is being returned to Cape Girardeau for burial; he is survived by his parents, two half brothers, two half-sisters, and maternal grandmother.

75 years ago: Dec. 27, 1926

College Inn at 825 Broadway, practically ruined by early morning fire Christmas Day, with damage estimated at $4,000, will be rebuilt as soon as satisfactory insurance adjustment can be made, say Rega Rigdon and Nola Gunnett, owners; fire, which destroyed greater part of roof and second storage of building and damaged furniture and household effects on second floor, originated from furnace.

City Commissioner Al F. Meystedt announces that Bellevue street, from Lorimier to Middle, will be closed to traffic to permit children to use this snow- and ice-covered section for coasting.
