Two small John Deere tractors, valued at $45,000, were reported stolen yesterday from Compas and Strack Inc., an implement dealership in Jackson; the tractors were parked on display at the dealership on Birk Road.

CHAFFEE, Mo. -- Ignoring Mayor Robert Capshaw's concerns about insurance liability, the Chaffee City Council unanimously votes to continue housing Scott County's prisoners and then overrides Capshaw's veto of its original vote.

50 years ago: Dec. 2, 1960

Dr. Mark F. Scully, president of State College, in a letter to Gov. James T. Blair Jr., urges caution in undertaking a junior college program in Missouri; Scully, a member of the governor's Committee on Education Beyond the High School, raises questions about state aid for a system of public junior colleges.

The State College Indians pried the lid off the 1960-1961 hoop season last night by defeating the Wayland College Pioneers of Plainview, Texas, 81-54, at Houck Field House; Ron Gray led the Indian attack with 21 points.

75 years ago: Dec. 2, 1935

Edward L. Markham, Cape Girardeau contractor, submits low bids to the city council to construct the two projects called for in the building of a sewer system in the new Sanitary District No. 6 in the city's west end; his total bid was $117,941.85.

Works Progress Administration workmen razing Old Lorimier School are finding some massive stone, brick and cement construction in the historic building and some fine lumber that is nearly all yellow poplar; the building was constructed in 1871; outside walls measure 36 inches thick and inside walls are 30 inches.

100 years ago: Dec. 2, 1910

Work is progressing rapidly on the new building in Haarig, which will be occupied by the Good Hope Drug Store; the building will be three stories, the ground floor to be used by the drugstore.

Mrs. Park Adams, who has been visiting her daughter at Bernie, Mo., has returned to Cape Girardeau; she is getting ready to move to Florida to join Mr. Adams, who is there looking after his orange farm.
