The city of Cape Girardeau has taken over operation of the air traffic control tower and now wants to assume control of the weather service station at the municipal airport; port manager Mark Seesing says bringing the tower under the city's control and moving ahead with efforts to obtain the weather service contract are part of an overall policy to put the city in control of operations at the airport.

Almost 500 students in Cape Girardeau public schools stayed home Friday with flu-like symptoms; the highest rate of absenteeism was at May Greene Elementary School, where 85 of their 263 students were out sick.

1964

A mass of Arctic air, powered by brisk northerly winds, rolled into the Cape Girardeau area yesterday in a pre-winter cold wave; the overnight low temperature at the municipal airport is 6 degrees, with Lee Albert reporting the morning low in Cape Girardeau at 4 degrees; Jackson's low is 5.

St. Louis contractor Minner Construction Co. is the apparent low bidder for the construction of a classroom building for State College at the corner of Pacific Street and Normal Avenue; the building was designed by the architectural firm of Buchmueller and Whitworth of Sikeston, Missouri.

1939

William G. Maier, a Broadway businessman, calls The Missourian to ask where boys and girls will do their ice skating this year, "since the pond at Fairground Park has been drained"; the lagoon was drained in the fall by sportsmen to rescue all game fish in it; rain hasn't been sufficient to refill it.

The Jackson City Council passes an ordinance that forbids the sale, display or discharge of fireworks at any time in the city; penalties run from fines of $25 to $90 or 10 days imprisonment.

1914

With the arrangements for the municipal Christmas tree entering the last stages, Frank Kimmel starts the morning with the task of getting the big cedar into the city and installed at the courthouse square; a monster tree from the old fairground farm of Charles Blattner was tendered the committee by Blattner, and Kimmel was assigned the task of felling it and transporting it to town.

Will Bock has returned to his old position at the Cape Steam Laundry and is again on the wagon hustling new business for the concern.
