Charges of violating a city ordinance prohibiting the sale of certain goods on Sunday will be sought against 14 Cape Girardeau stores as a result of a police investigation Sunday; among the stores to be charged are several convenience stores, grocery stores and a drugstore.

The Rev. Richard Janson, associate pastor of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, has been named chaplain of the Cape Girardeau Police Department; he will serve in a volunteer capacity to provide counseling and spiritual guidance to department employees.

50 years ago: Nov. 9, 1957

In connection with the state teachers meeting in St. Louis this week, Alene Sadler of Cape Girardeau was elected president of the Missouri Classroom Teachers Association; she is an instructor at Central High School.

W. Glenn McCain, retired superintendent of mails at the Cape Girardeau post office and a York Rite Mason who was widely known for his lodge work, dies at a local hospital; he was in the postal service for 45 years, beginning in 1902, when he was hired as a substitute carrier.

75 years ago: Nov. 9, 1932

Losing only one county place, Democrats swept Cape Girardeau County at yesterday's election, giving majorities to the national and state tickets in a proportion not reached in 50 years; the only Republican to be elected in a list of 10 candidates was Judge Norbert Sewing of near Oak Ridge, who was returned as a member of the County Court; on the national stage, Franklin D. Roosevelt defeated Herbert Hoover for president.

It is reported that Rush H. Limbaugh, a Cape Girardeau lawyer, will be named special deputy commissioner of the finance department to take charge of the closed Sturdivant Bank.

100 years ago: Nov. 9, 1907

The Daily Republican is presented on narrower newsprint today, as it was printed on one of the company's job presses; mechanics began last night to install the new newspaper press and folder, and it is hoped that by next Wednesday the task will be completed; during this time, the paper will be published in diminutive form.

Charles H. Overstolz of St. Louis is in Cape Girardeau visiting his sister, Mrs. Max Koeck, and looking over the city.
