25 years ago: Nov. 8, 1985

The Cape Girardeau City Council has turned down a request by Saint Francis Medical Center officials for a variance to the plumbing code that would have allowed the hospital to construct its planned outpatient service building over an existing clay sewer pipe.

Southeast Missouri State University has been given permission by the city council to widen a portion of Sprigg Street through the addition of a nine-foot lane on the west side of the road between New Madrid Street and the entrance to Towers parking lot.

50 years ago: Nov. 8, 1960

The heaviest vote in the city's history is cast in Cape Girardeau up to the noon hour; with seven hours of balloting still ahead, 36.3 percent of the city's eligible registered voters had marked their ballot; the total vote is 4,906, well ahead of the all-time high of 4,004 cast at the corresponding point in the presidential election of 1958.

The 14th annual Missourian Art Exhibition, scheduled for the weekend of Dec. 3 to 4, will feature as its guest artist Carolyn Plochmann of Carbondale, Ill.

75 years ago: Nov. 8, 1935

Ready to proceed with his hunt for the predatory wolves in heavily wooded northeast Cape Girardeau County, St. Louis sportsman Denver M. Wright advises The Missourian he will be ready to start within a week; just now, Wright is scouring the state for wolf dogs, the right kind to track the animals.

Iverson Michie of Cape Girardeau has been appointed an assistant national bank examiner for the 8th Federal Reserve District; he will report for duty Nov. 15.

100 years ago: Nov. 8, 1910

Election Day dawns with beautiful weather; in consequence at an early hour groups begin gathering at polling places; women with hot coffee and food in the vicinities of the polling places offer inducements to all passersby to partake, with the hope of influencing votes for the 10th Amendment; scouts and workers for various candidates are out distributing literature for their causes.

Maj. James Brooks and his assistant return from Mississippi County, where he just finished staking out the route for the Charleston and Hickman Railroad, which will connect Cape Girardeau with Hickman, Ky., via Charleston.
