Democrats scored the greatest off-year election victory in party history in Cape Girardeau County yesterday, sweeping 12 of 14 county offices to almost duplicate landslides accomplished in the surging Democratic presidential years of 1932 and 1936.
Cape Girardeau County voters went along with the rest of the state in opposing Amendment 3 yesterday, which would have allowed branch banking.
75 years ago: Nov. 5, 1938
Delegates of the 79th annual session of the Missouri Conference of the African Methodist Church close the convention at St. James AME Church; the conference had been in session since Wednesday.
The officers of McKendree Memorial Association met with trustees representing the two branches of the Methodist church at R.M. McCombs' office in Jackson yesterday; after winding up the business affairs for the past year, the board of trustees was organized, electing J.T. McNeely of Fruitland chairman, W.G. Niblick of Jackson vice chairman, and the Rev. D.R. Wasson, pastor of New McKendree Church in Jackson, secretary-treasurer.
100 years ago: Nov. 5, 1908
The official count of votes at Jackson has revealed that the country people voted down the proposed stock law, but by a majority less than expected; there were 2,025 votes for and 2,606 against the measure.
W.J. Lee, a plumber, has written Cape Girardeau Mayor W.C. Patton asserting that the catch basins provided for the new sewer system are faulty; the basins are supposed to catch all sand, rubbish and other hard material that could get into the system and clog it; Lee says the basins are built so they will catch nothing.
