Use of Water Street by the Frisco Railroad to route its tracks during the next phase of construction of the Main Street Levee Improvement District's floodwall was approved last night by the city council, but only if adequate safeguards are included to protect the city from street damage.

Single fares on Cape Girardeau city buses would be advanced from 10 cents to 15 cents, and the ticket book of 10 fares, now $1, would sell for $1.30 under a fare increase requested by the Cape Transit Corp.

75 years ago: Nov. 5, 1932

Montgomery Ward & Co. has signed a lease for a site on the east side of North Main Street, just north of Independence Street, upon which a new department store building will be erected; work on the new, $50,000 building will begin as soon as the site is cleared.

Results in the presidential straw vote taken among students and faculty members of the Teachers College are announced; Franklin D. Roosevelt got 253 votes; Herbert Hoover received 175, and Norman Thomas, 51.

100 years ago: Nov. 5, 1907

Last night's city council meeting filled with interesting business; Cape Girardeau's two policemen were suspended and two new officers -- John Macke and Will C. Stevens -- were appointed to fill those spots; in other business, the council sharply debated a resolution that provides for a lawsuit against Louis Houck to regain a part of Middle Street, which the depot of the Cape and Chester Railroad occupies.

Yesterday, a large number of land owners of Southeast Missouri met in the Cape Girardeau Commercial Club rooms for the purpose of organizing the Southeast Missouri Drainage Association.
